Shoulder Arthroscopy in Mexico City
Rotator cuff repair, SLAP and PASTA lesions, treated through incisions a few millimetres wide — with far less post-operative pain than open surgery and a faster return to movement.
All-inclusive from US$ 11,500
Repairing soft tissue without opening the shoulder
The shoulder depends on soft tissue for stability in a way no other joint does, so most shoulder problems are tears rather than worn surfaces. Arthroscopy is how those tears are reached: a camera and instruments passed through small portals, with the muscle around the joint left largely undisturbed.
What the names mean
Rotator cuff repair
Reattaches a torn tendon to the bone with anchors. The most common shoulder operation we perform.
SLAP repair
Addresses a tear of the labrum where the biceps tendon attaches at the top of the socket — typical of throwing and overhead athletes.
PASTA lesion repair
Treats a partial-thickness tear on the joint side of the cuff, which behaves differently from a full tear and is repaired differently.
The recovery asks for patience
A repaired tendon has to heal onto bone, and that timeline is biological rather than negotiable. Expect a sling, then a staged programme that adds passive motion before active motion, and active motion before strengthening. Rushing the middle stage is the commonest cause of a repair failing.
If your imaging shows worn joint surfaces rather than a repairable tear, arthroscopy is not the right operation and we will say so — see shoulder replacement instead.

When arthroscopy is the right answer
-
Night pain on that side
Being woken by the shoulder when you roll onto it is the most common reason rotator cuff patients finally seek surgery.
-
Weakness lifting the arm
Difficulty raising the arm overhead, or holding a weight away from the body, suggests a tear rather than inflammation.
-
A shoulder that slips
Instability, repeated dislocation or a deep clunk on overhead movement points to labral damage.
Shoulder arthroscopy questions
-
How long does a shoulder surgery take?
Shoulder surgery typically takes 1 to 2 hours, depending on the specific procedure and its complexity. Minimally invasive procedures, such as shoulder arthroscopy, may take less time, while more extensive surgeries, like rotator cuff repair or total shoulder replacement, may take longer. At Orthopedic Surgeries Mexico we will assess your condition and provide a more accurate timeframe during your consultation, ensuring you have a clear understanding of what to expect.
-
What are the risks associated with shoulder surgery?
While shoulder surgery is generally safe, it does come with potential risks, including infection, bleeding, nerve damage, blood clots, and reactions to anesthesia. Some patients may experience persistent pain, stiffness, or reduced mobility. In some cases, complications such as scar tissue formation, implant issues, or incomplete healing may occur. Recovery can take several months, and strenuous activities should be avoided until fully healed. It’s important to discuss these risks with your shoulder specialist to understand how they relate to your unique case and the steps taken to minimize them.
-
How long will my shoulder replacement last?
With proper care, modern shoulder implants can last 15 to 20 years or longer. Regular follow-ups, adherence to post-operative care, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle help maximize their lifespan, allowing you to enjoy long-term pain relief and mobility.
-
Is physical therapy necessary after shoulder surgery?
Yes, physical therapy is typically recommended after shoulder surgery. It plays a crucial role in promoting healing, improving flexibility, strength, and stability, and helping you regain normal movement. Therapy usually begins soon after surgery, with exercises tailored to your specific needs and recovery goals. The duration and intensity of physical therapy will depend on the type of shoulder surgery you had, but it can range from several weeks to a few months. Consistent participation in physical therapy helps reduce the risk of complications and supports a smoother and faster recovery.

-
When will I be able to return to normal activities after shoulder surgery?
